Zvonimir Durkinjak had another successful tournament on home soil. At the Croatian International this week he won the mixed doubles catefory for the third time in a row. He speaks to Badminton Europe about the defeat in the men's doubles, his training environment and how big badminton is in his country.
Zvonimir, are you satisfied with your results at home?
Yes, I am satisfied with my achievements. But I think we could have done better in the men’s doubles.
You have lost a close match in the semi-finals against Fladberg/Astrup …
The reason why we lost was that we were not patient enough at the end of the third game. We already saw ourselves in the final which is not that good. So we did some unforced errors.
But you have won the mixed doubles event together with your partner Stasa Poznanovic. Already for the third time in a row …
… well I hope that it will be a long series (laughs). Because for me it is much easier to play at home. There are more spectators cheering for you and then you just play better.
How do you run your daily badminton business? Are you a professional?
I could say I am a professional as I am practising two times a day - but not throughout the whole week. Beside that I go to college. We are practising in Zagreb, in a hall with 10 courts. It is only 15 minutes away from my home.
How big is badminton in Croatia?
Badminton in Croatia is not very popular. Everyone thinks it’s an easy sport. Many don't even know it’s part of the Olympic Programme and many laugh when you say you play badminton.
Thanks for the interview!
